Current Projects:

  • Aboriginal Family Intervention Project - working with older members of the Adelaide Indigenous community to train and employ Mentors for people with illicit drug use problems. 
  • Advocacy - ADAC, through its committee membership, ensures that issues relating to substance misuse are put forward. ADAC staff, to the best of their ability, ensure that Indigenous people who need an advocate are able to access facilities such as the Nungas Court, Guardianship Board, Aboriginal Housing and other government and non-government services.
  • Community Awareness -  ADAC is involved in community events such as alcohol and drug free awareness days and Drug Action Week. ADAC runs substance misuse awareness forums in communities across South Australia.
  • Dementia Training - alcohol related brain damage training.
  • Education  - ADAC continues to be involved with Flinders University Medical School and Adelaide University Public Health Masters Course. ADAC will also attend TAFE Colleges, High Schools and Primary Schools to conduct education sessions as requested.
  • Health Promotion - ADAC does all its health promotion in-house, which includes:
    • Hepatitis C Posters
    • Hepatitis C Calendars
    • Substance Use Posters and Pamphlets
    • Petrol Sniffing Manual

  • Makin' Tracks - Mobile team helping communities develop local community substance misuse strategies, education and training.
  • Petrol Sniffing and Other Solvents Manual Training - development of Petrol Sniffing and Other Solvent resource materials. Community training around resource kit.
  • Police Drug Diversion Liaison Project
  • Quality Improvement Project - A national pilot project for substance misuse services.
  • Past Projects:
  • Intravenous Drug Use (IDU) Research 
    Using Rapid Assessment Procedures to Investigate the Impact of Injecting Drug Use Amongst Indigenous Australians in Metropolitan Adelaide.

    The aim of this project was to use Rapid Assessment Procedures (RAP) to undertake research to assess the practices of Aboriginal injecting drug users in metropolitan Adelaide. This project has gathered information about injecting practices and issues relating to Injecting Drug Use (IDU) that are important to the Aboriginal community.

    The Community Report, based on the findings of this research, is now available

  • Grief and Trauma - issues and grief and loss in the Murray lands area.

  • Quality Use of Medication Education Project - A collaborative project of ADAC and the Flinders University School of Nursing and Midwifery which explores working with clients, carers and families on the appropriate use of medication for Aboriginal people with mental health problems.  The final report "Better Medication Management for Aboriginal People with Mental Health Disorders and Their Carers" (pdf - 2.5mg large file!) is now available for download.   • Quality Use of Medication Pilot Project - The aim of this study was to explore the particular needs, experiences and contexts of Aboriginal people diagnosed with a mental health disorder, their carers and other family members, focusing on issues relating to management of medications.
  • Training Frontline Workers Initiative
    Development of Resources to Enhance the Education and Training of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workers in the Illicit Drug Field.

    This project commenced in October, 2001. It is a two year project that has been funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging through the National Illicit Drug Strategy.
